These rare telescopic pop-up hard-shell campers are a special breed for a special breed. They raise and lower quickly and easily with a hydraulic hand jack, giving over 6.5 feet of head space when raised, and sleek aerodynamic fuel savings when lowered. No canvas to worry about drying out after rainstorms like some pop-ups, it’s aluminum top to bottom with a wooden frame. It’s built as a slide-in truck bed camper but I have a van so as you can see in the pics I mounted it in a solid double-axle trailer with heavy-duty tires for towing anywhere your rig wants to go. Gives it a sweet little back deck too. Looking to sell it as is, with the trailer, as it’s really a complete setup that way. See the details about the sink drain and propane to understand why.
I’m also selling my van (2003 Ford E350 Extended Wagon) and would love to sell them as a package so if you’re interested in both we can definitely work out a sweet deal!
Everything works. Lights, electric fridge, stove, sink, water pump, ceiling fan. Everything you need in a compact self-contained space station. There’s a portable toilet stored outside in a box on the deck cause I find it gross to store inside…
SOLAR: I’ve installed a fully functional 12v solar system with two 105 watt solar panels, four 16 ah lithium batteries, and a charge controller and battery monitor made by Bogart Engineering. Everything high efficiency. Able to charge devices, run the four internal bright LED lights, a string of LEDs, the ceiling Fantastic fan, and the electric fridge no problem for days. Typically 3-5 days without any sun (the fridge is the biggest draw so it depends on how much it needs to run due to outside temps). The panels can recharge the batteries from complete discharge to full with 5-7 hours of good sun. Usually 1-3 hours of sun a day is enough to keep things going strong. There’s also a few AC outlets that become active when plugged into AC power via a cable that runs out the back, so it would also be easy to install an inverter to give those juice from the 12v batteries, and/or an AC to DC converter to help charge the batteries. I had one originally but sold it because the solar was always enough to charge the batteries for my needs.
FRIDGE: The efficient top-loading fridge can run on AC or DC power and works really well.
GREY WATER: A cutting board/prep counter slides over the sink to give more counter space, and out to reveal the sink. The sink faucet is equipped with a foot pump and a 12v electric pump for multi-use. It drains into a 6 foot long 4 inch pipe that runs along the outside, between the wall of the camper and the trailer. There’s a tap on the outside of the trailer to drain it. There’s also an outside tap direct from the 25 gallon tank for washing/cleaning up outside which I installed without thinking much about it but found VERY useful to have. The water lines have stop valves right at the tank in case of any future leaks, also very useful!
WATER TIGHT: I replaced the ceiling and inside walls + insulation after storing it through my second winter (two years ago) because of water intrusion, but then sealed everything up and haven’t had any issues since.
STOVE: Three burner stove with a propane tank stored outside in the box you see on the “deck” to the left of the door. The box on the right stores a Thetford portable toilet.
DOORS: The Dutch doors are great. I love being able to keep the top one open for air and there’s a pull down bug screen, so you can have it open all night for a breeze, while keeping the bottom door closed to uninvited creatures…
We primarily used this as our kitchen/living area/music studio while sleeping in the van, but the dining table and bench seats can also fold down into a two person bed, making it a complete living setup. There’s also a smaller bar-style table system that can go in a few places when the bed is down.
It’s a bit heartbreaking to sell our beloved station that I’ve put so much work and love into but the time has come. It was the perfect companion to our galaxy-famous OG Astro van, both painted galactic by my partner, but since it came into our care we’ve had a new little human join our adventure team, and with another one on the way it’s time for something bigger, and more grounded on Earth! And so, the space station awaits its new captain to take charge…!
The loaded trailer weighs under 1800 lbs, and the camper itself is less than 5.5 ft high and 8.5 ft long so in Oregon neither camper nor trailer need a title or registration! Simple. Solid. Space. Station. In space, there is no need for papers…
