Synopsis
Based on the novel by Henry James
The story frames on 7-year-old Maisie, caught in a custody battle between her mother – a rock and roll icon – and her father. What Maisie Knew is an evocative portrayal of the chaos of adult life seen entirely from a child’s point of view.

Divorces can mess up a kid's life and when a kid is as innocent as Maisie you feel for them even more.
The plot revolves around a six-year-old girl Maisie whose parents got separated and now have her joint custody, but her parents are as pieces of shit as one can be they treat her like a trophy they want her but don't want to take care of her and are always busy in their work, I mean people take care of their fucking dogs more than what they do for Maisie here then comes in Maisie's parent's new life partners who are really nice people, Margo who used to be Maisie's babysitter is now married to her father and…

Review by Florin Scanlon ★★★★ 5
For the entire duration of the movie we take Maisie's (Onata Aprile) fragile little hand and she leads us in her world. It's not all rainbows and unicorns and pink dresses though; instead indifference, selfishness and arrogance surround her. We follow the 6-year-old daughter of rock singer Susanna (Julianne Moore) and art dealer Beale (Steve Coogan) as she is caught in the middle of her parents' problems who don't get along anymore.
Moore and Coogan give good performances but given that they're mostly in the background I was more impressed by Aprile as the innocent daughter being pushed around and neglected. Also Alexander Skarsgård and Joanna Vanderham playing Susanna and Beale's "other half replacements", Lincoln and Margo, are of note.…

conceptually nothing we've not seen before (a kid's perspective of going through a divorce of her parents, with a little extra salt here) but the superb acting makes this standing out. Onata Aprile is carrying every spectator's heart through the ordeal she has to go through, Moore and Coogan are playing their asshole caretakers exceptionally well.
the elliptical structure doesn't work out perfectly but isn't supposed to, you often feel as lost as our central character. it all drives towards an inevitable end you can see coming from some miles away but that's where the unwavering, everlasting, undestroyable American hopefulness has the upper hand. you can live with that, your heart might have already bled out by then anyway.

Part of jvince's Top Ten Films of 2013
The Good: Amazing performance from six-year-old(!) lead Onata Aprile. If Quvenzhané Wallis got nominated for last year's Beasts of the Southern Wild, then Aprile should get a nod too; she deserves it. Aprile possesses the charm, the skill, and the star power -- the complete package. She's simply too good for her age, it's unreal. The future is most certainly bright for this budding star. Stellar supporting turns from Julianne Moore,Alexander Skarsgård, Joanna Vanderham, and Steve Coogan. A refreshing -- and oftentimes raw -- take on the subject of broken families through the child's point of view. Within an hour and a half, Maisie goes…

Review by Andy Ferguson ★★★★
Scott McGhee and David Siegel's new film, What Maisie Knew, features two of the most self-absorbed, scathingly unlikable characters I've seen in recent cinema, yet the approach by the filmmakers consistently injects a wonderfully naive and humble aura that they wisely never stray from, resulting in a work containing a bottomless pit of optimism. It's been a couple of days since I've seen it, but it's resonated more and more and I can't shake its effect.
Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan play said awful human beings, a divorced man & woman who insist on being in a heated custody battle for their young daughter, Maisie, but never for the well-being of the child in their minds. It's all extremely selfish, both…
